"If I Betray These Words" Announced as Bronze Winner for 3rd Annual Anthem Awards

Moral Injury of Healthcare announced today that If I Betray These Words: Moral Injury in Medicine and Why It's So Hard for Clinicians to Put Patients First is a Bronze Winner in the Book, Story, or Feature category for the 3rd Annual Anthem Awards.

Booklist called If I Betray These Words, "an important call to action." And Kirkus Reviews declared it, "a fierce denunciation of American medicine."

Author Wendy Dean, CEO and co-founder of MIHC, confronts the threat and broken promises of moral injury – what it is; where it comes from; how it manifests; and who’s fighting back against it. Dr. Dean offers solutions from organizational strategies to policy changes that can make medicine better for clinicians and patients alike.

According to Dr. Dean, "Reaching a broad audience of clinicians and patients drove the story-telling approach to this topic. It had to be accessible and relatable to spread the message about how rampant corporatization is making it equally challenging to provide and receive healthcare in the U.S. I am honored to receive this award."

Dean continued, "Clinicians across the country are tough, resourceful, and resilient, but feel trapped between the patient-first values of their Hippocratic oath and the business imperatives of a broken healthcare system."

She added, "Healthcare doesn't have to be so hard. It's time to act."

This year’s Anthem Award Winners were selected from a pool of over 2,000 submissions from 44 countries by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences (IADAS). Anthem judges are intellectually diverse leaders from across the impact industry with expertise that spans across the Anthem cause areas.

“The Anthem Awards were born out of the desire to amplify and celebrate the voices that are creating sustainable change and to inspire others to take action,” said Patricia McLoughlin, Anthem Awards general manager. “In a year where so much is at stake, it is incredibly important to recognize impact work and celebrate the progress happening globally."

By amplifying voices like Dr. Dean that spark global change, the Anthem Awards are defining a new benchmark for impactful work that inspires others to take action in their communities.
